A brief introduction to the role of a Ranger

Concise Oxford Dictionary, tenth edition

There are many types of Rangers in Western Australia employed by various Government Departments.

Perhaps the most high profile Ranger in Western Australia is the Local Government Ranger. These Rangers are employed by Local Councils and are mainly responsible for:

  • Dog Control
  • Fire Control
  • Parking Control
  • Litter Control
  • Stock Control
  • Control of Off Road Vehicles
  • Operating Councils Dog, Vehicle and Stock Pounds
  • Assisting in Life threatening Emergency situations
  • School education programmes

These duties will vary depending on the location in the State and the individual Councils priorities.

The samples of verse available on this topic reflect the experiences and thoughts of the author whofor eighteen years has experienced the highs and lows of the role of a Local Government Ranger.

There is a tinge of sadness in some of the verse as the author has tried to come to terms with the situation the dogs are in and tells it as he thinks the dog would, if it were able.

An underlying cynicism is evident in some of the fire related verse which is a reflection of some of the frustrations experienced by many Rangers in response to the apathy of some property owners in fire prone areas.

A sense of humour comes to the fore in some of the verse relating to the many and varied roles and tasks the Rangers carry out on a daily basis.
